If you have suddenly encountered a persistent, bright green line on the display of your iPhone X, it’s time to make an appointment with the Apple Store.
If you just spent north of $1,000 for a brand-new iPhone X, you’ll probably be a bit perturbed if your display is anything less than perfect. And while Apple itself has published guidance to manage expectations for some of the peculiarities of its new smartphone’s OLED display—highlighting expected issues you may encounter—there are still some plain ol’ display bugs you may uncover as you use your device.
According to Macrumors, a number of customers—but seemingly a very small percentage of total iPhone X owners—have taken to the web to report a mysterious green line they’ve encountered while using their devices. They didn’t notice the bright line, running vertically across their devices, when they first started using the iPhone X. There’s also no reason to suspect iPhone trauma as the cuplrit, as the line has even appeared for thoes who have kept their iPhone Xs safe from drops, bumps, or other physical issues.
“…looks like I’m not the only one experiencing this vertical green line of pixels on the right side of the iPhone X. Tried to get in to the Genius Bar today but no appt. til Tuesday. Just tried a Restore without improvement,” one Twitter user writes.
This green line can appear and disappear at random, and it can affect both the 64- and 256-gigabyte versions of the iPhone X. While some users note that the green line appears at the extreme edge of their devices, others have posted photos showing the line appearing at more irritating locations on their iPhone X displays.
As TechCrunch notes, it’s possible that an electrical fault combined with the orientation of the pixels on the iPhone X—where green pixels sit in horizontal and vertical lines, unlike the alternating distribution of the device’s red and blue pixels—is creating the error. And there doesn’t appear to be any quick fix for those affected. Restarting or restoring the device may or may not remove the green line.
If you’re one of the few affected by this persistent green line, the only real solution you have is to make an appointment with the Apple Store. Apple appears to be replacing devices for the few who have encountered this issue.
